Embark on a captivating journey through the timeless wonders of British and world literature as we employ the illuminating Socratic method to uncover its depth and brilliance. In this course, we delve into the essence of great literature, probing its significance, unraveling its greatness, and extracting the profound insights it offers.
Our expedition commences with curated selections of smaller excerpts, poems, and short stories, allowing us to lay the groundwork for our exploration. Over the initial six weeks, we will engage in dynamic discussions centered around the five fundamental elements inherent in all fiction: setting, characters, conflict, plot, and theme. With each analysis, we deepen our understanding of storytelling’s essential components.
As our journey progresses, we transition to complete novels, journeying through the annals of British and world history in roughly chronological order. Crafting meticulous story charts for each novel, we traverse through the intricate narratives, accompanied by a curated selection of comprehension and thought-provoking questions.
Along the way, we illuminate the landscape of literary devices that adorn fiction, from the melodic allure of alliteration to the evocative imagery of metaphor. Our reading materials are thoughtfully selected to align with the reading comprehension level of 10-12-year-olds, allowing us to focus on honing our literary analysis skills rather than grappling with challenging texts.
Required texts will be announced later in the course, enabling us to commence our journey with open minds and eager hearts. Join us as we embark on an enriching exploration of British and world literature, unraveling its mysteries and uncovering its timeless treasures together.
